Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Fort Worth
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu traces its roots to early 20th-century Japan, when judo expert Mitsuyo Maeda brought his grappling knowledge to Brazil. In 1917, Maeda taught a young Carlos Gracie, who, along with his brothers—most notably Hélio Gracie—adapted the art into a system that prioritized leverage, timing, and ground control over size and strength. The Gracies pressure-tested their methods through challenge matches and real fights, refining techniques that allowed smaller practitioners to reliably defend themselves against larger, stronger opponents. This focus on real-world effectiveness became the hallmark of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), which would later evolve into both a global sport and one of the most widely adopted self-defense systems in the world.
Gracie University & the Curriculum Revolution
As BJJ spread rapidly, many schools lacked a structured path for beginners, often teaching techniques in an unsystematic way that led to frustration and early student drop-off. Recognizing this gap, brothers Ryron and Rener Gracie founded Gracie University, dedicating themselves to organizing the family’s most reliable self-defense techniques into a clear, progressive curriculum. After more than 15 years of live experimentation and refinement, they created a group-class training model that preserved the effectiveness of private lessons while dramatically improving accessibility, safety, and long-term retention for new students. Today, Certified Training Centers like Fort Worth Combatives deliver that same structured learning experience, giving beginners a logical, confidence-building path into jiu-jitsu without the overwhelm of “technique overload.” The result is training that feels intentional, respectful, and sustainable—built for real progress, real safety, and real people.

As a independently owned and operated Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu® Training Center we proudly offer multiple Gracie Jiu-Jitsu certified programs:

Gracie Combatives®, is the official adult beginner self-defense program of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, designed for people who want a clear starting point and real progress from day one. In this program, you’ll learn 36 foundational techniques carefully selected for their practicality, reliability, and effectiveness in real self-defense situations. Training happens in a fun, safe, and highly cooperative environment, where partners work with you—not against you—so you can focus on skill development without unnecessary intensity or ego.
Each one-hour class delivers two purposeful lessons: one standing self-defense technique and one ground self-defense technique, following the structured curriculum pioneered by Gracie University. Every technique is broken down into simple, repeatable drills and progressive partner exercises, making learning intuitive instead of overwhelming. The program is built to be accessible, sustainable, and injury-conscious, helping beginners build confidence, coordination, and muscle memory through guided repetition and smart drilling—not randomness.

Women Empowered is the official women-only self-defense curriculum developed by the Gracie family, built on the most practical applications of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). The program focuses on realistic threat scenarios, teaching women how to stop dangerous situations using technique, leverage, timing, and positional control—not size, strength, or athletic ability.
Across a structured 15-lesson training progression, you’ll learn to recognize, disrupt, and neutralize the 20 most statistically common attacks women face. These include defenses against wrist and hair grabs, choke holds, bear hugs, and ground pins, as well as situations involving a weapon-bearing assailant at close range. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to build confidence through repetition and cooperative partner drills, ensuring every student gets meaningful, safe reps without unnecessary intensity.
